I just bought the Pioneer DVR 640H-S and so far so good. However, it costs a
bit more than what you said was your price range. I got mine from J&R.com
for $330 (including shipping).

Recording to the HDD is easy and it reads my DVD-R (video mode) and DVD-RW
disks without a hitch. I love the high-speed transfer of stuff on the hard
drive to a DVD (about 8 - 10 minutes per movie). Recording movies from TCM
is a snap. And it's nice to be able to delete the extra minutes before and
after a show so that I only end up with the movie. Then, a quick transfer to
DVD for permanent storage. (At least as permanent until I switch to Blu-ray,
and then the next thing, and the next....:)

BTW, I previously owned a Samsung DVD recorder. It gave me nothing but
trouble. Half the time, it seemed, the recording to the DVD didn't "take".
You never knew when that would happen. You'd think everything was fine until
you went to play the DVD. Then, nothing. Argh. I finally decided to go a
different route and get a machine with a hard drive. Now, I record to it
first and if all is well, then I transfer the movie to the DVD. So far, this
Pioneer is working perfectly.
