 NTSC DVDs have 720 x 480 pixels, PAL DVDs have 720 x 576. (I see 704 x 480
 discs sometimes, usually non-amamorphic letterboxed titles).
 
 Into this you can put either 4:3 or 16:9 material; note that in no case do you
 get square pixels. The display always has to scale one dimension more than
 another.
 
 By comparison, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are 1920 x 1080, always 16:9, square pixels.
