Mike,

I've been doing HDV editing (and HD DVD authoring) for about a year and a
half, using several different pieces of software and hardware. If your needs
are modest, and require light editing and effects, the low cost, high speed
bargain is from Ulead in Video Studio 10 Plus (@$89). This runs extremely
well on a single processor 3.2GHz P4 machine with a GB of RAM.

Very comparable in terms of low cost and simplicity is iMovieHD, which only
makes sense if you already have a Mac already. I would not especially
advocate buying a new Mac to use this product.

If your needs are closer to the feature set of Premiere Pro, then Vegas 7 is
very rich in features, adequately fast on a single processor P4, and not
terribly expensive. They also offer a stripped down version for a lot less
money if price is an issue.

I would personally avoid Pinnacle, Cyberlink PowerDirector, Magix Movie Edit
Pro 11, or Nero Vision, all of which support HDV but do a pretty poor job of
it IMHO.

If price is no object, Final Cut Studio Pro HD is a really nice, integrated
suite, albeit pricey especially if you have no Mac hardware and need to buy
an appropriately sized Mac to run it. Despite being complex, and really slow
(even on my top of the line dual 3.0 Xeon Mac Pro), the results are
beautiful and the total feature set is excellent.

Since you have not offered a budget, or described your editing needs
explicitly, I would need more information in order to help further. You
might want to try the free trial of Ulead software to see if it will fulfill
your needs without making any further hardware investment. It is the only
solution I have tried of the 7 I have here for HDV which will run adequately
on a 2.8 GHz machine.
