AVI is a container format - a framework for storing video and audio
streams multiplexed into a single file.

AVI - the framework itself - does not specify the actual format of the
streams. Instead, each AVI file has a header which tells which codecs
should be used for viewing the file. If you don't have suitable codecs
installed in your system, you can't play back the file.
