I asked the following question on the forums at avsforum.com, because I
found someone else ask a similar question there earlier, but I received
no replies. Anyone here have any idea what "test 5 hdcp free" means?
---------------------------
I was watching the extras on disc 4 of season 7 of "The Simpsons", and
after what I was watching finished, my player (Samsung HD-931, hooked up
via component cables to my Samsung HLN617W TV) went to the main menu for
the disc instead of the extras menu like it normally does. I selected
extras and hit ENTER (this is using the factory remote, by the way). It
went to the expected menu, but superimposed on top was a large box
containing two lines of text: "test 5" and "hdcp free". I turned the DVD
player off and back on, and it seemed to be working normally.
So...what the heck was that? I found another post here where someone
asked this same question, but the only responses they received were from
people telling them that someone would probably come along with the
answer...but no one did.
---------------------------
I mentioned that I was using the factory remote because apparently,
based on some comments I found when trying to figure this out, there is
some kind of similar message that shows up as part of converting some
Samsung players to region-free, and that requires some codes from the
remote that are not on the factory remote. People doing this have used
third-party programmable remotes to send the magic codes.
