I do it all the time:

Don't share your DL dir, (protects your privacy and prevents uploading fake,
bad and mislabeled files)

Always try to keep your share folder(s) on different drives, (system will be
more efficient and avoid incomming and outgoing collisions and waiting

Some of my shared folders are network based

I also use a DVD, to hold music video shares.
