'Record breaking pre-orders' just means that lots of people put down
interest. It doesn't mean they will follow through though.

A lot of people will put down a pre-order just because they are afraid
that if they don't, there's no way to get one on the day if they
change their minds or not.

They are Sony PR releases, pumping up the pre-orders trying to paint a
very positive picture for the PS3. Considering how poorly it sold on
release thanks to cut production figures in the US and Japan, it's
sony's last attempt to make the PS3 look like a must have item.

What they aren't saying is how poorly it's selling now that it's out
of the gates and in plentiful supply.

Japanese gamers are buying less than 20-25k a week.

Furthermore, VF5 has sold very poorly compared to previous must-have
titles. It may be at the top of the charts, but it only added 5k extra
sales to the PS3s total for that week, and furthermore, 45k is pitiful
in the context of the market it's in.

Sales will plummet after launch. With plentiful supply on launch day,
those that really need it will have it already.

My prediction is that once people see how big a hole it's going tomake
in their bank blanace, they will think twice and give up on it until a
price cut!

As for the blu-ray sales outselling HD-DVD in January - it's obvious
that is this has more to do with the number of releases in January on
each respective format, and the rebate PS3 owners got off Blu-Ray
disks than any preference in the early adopters market.
