I'm sure that how it does it must depend on the individual recorder.
Under the circumstances that you mention, the stand alone recorder
that I have, will make a seperate entry for each time you record
something new. I'm pretty sure the DVD/VCR combos do something
similar. It also breaks the piece up into chapters of a size you chose
or defaults to 6 minutes.
Also by the push of one button (forget which one) it will make a new
chapter mark each time it is pushed.
