MP3 was created by Fraunhofer and Thomson in the early 1990s and will
play on any MP3 player.

WMA was created by Microsoft in the late 1990s and will play on many
(but not all) MP3 players.

WMA is a bit more efficient than MP3, but unfortunately there are not
nearly as many tools out there for working on WMA files as there are for
MP3 files.
