FWIW, I've been making xvid/divx conversions from MPEG2 (SD and
lately HD) captures for 5 years or more. During that time I've
tried out 4 or more stand-alone DVD players which were Divx
certified. Eventually I've abandoned each, relying entirely on
PCs to replay captures and conversions to TV.
Some of the problems were:
* not all encoding features are supported by the "certified"
products (for example QPel),
* some players had trouble maintaining a/v synch as I increased
the bit rate I use,
* most players had FF/skip problems.
In the unsupported feature case, I only recall one player
providing a message as to why it would not play the file.
If your files all play on the PC and not all play on the
stand-alone, the answer would seem obvious!
