It gets even messier when you consider two scenarios that have the
same net outcome.
#1. You rent a DVD and invite a friend to watch it with you.
#2. You rent a DVD, make a copy, return the rental DVD and watch the
copy at a later time. You keep the copy in a safe place.
Please indicate exactly where "theft" has occurred.
The courts ruled that the licensing agreements on software are not
valid because they are not based on statuatory law. Some lawyers got
together and made ad hoc "law" which is not binding.
The entertainment industry can pontificate all it wants but there are
legal standards they must meet. The fact that they can bully people
into accepting their ridiculous terms is yet another datum in the
oft-repeated claim that most people are sheep.
