It was and is "versatile."

It's just computer nerds who don't care about being precise with words
(odd, since you gotta be exact when programming) -- hence we had "disk"
with a "k" and "video" when it's always been "versatile."

I agree video was, is, and will be the primary motivation for
technological advances to the format, but it was conceived of more
broadly than just video and thus named accordingly.
