Unless the discs use some kind of DRM like the Sony
discs in a recent thread on this NG, that sounds like
a hardware problem. When the unmounted DVD is in the
drive, try running "dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/hdx" replace
x with the approproiate device.

I have a new install of Etch on this PC. It won't play
encrypted DVDs because I haven't installed libdvdcss
yet. When I put an encrypted DVD in the drive, it is
automatically mounted.

skelton@debian:~$ dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/hdd | grep Media
:-( reported write performance might be bogus
Mounted Media: 10h, DVD-ROM
Media Book Type: 00h, DVD-ROM book [revision 0]

skelton@debian:~$ mount | grep media
/dev/hdd on /media/cdrom0 type iso9660 (ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,user=skelton)
