On the exposure front, avoid anything that's going to need serious
grading, because, for me, that's the single biggest failing of HDV;
pushing the colors too far will make compression artifacts very
obvious.

That's particularly a problem on solid areas of a single color (e.g
gray walls) where the MPEG-2 compression throws away most of the
detail... push the grading and you'll get banding and worse.
