I'm (pretty much) a newbie and I was just wondering that if I hooked up
a VCR to a (yet-to-be-purchased) DVD Recorder and made DVD's out of my
old home movie and TV show tapes is the quality that the DVD recorder
spits out very lossy?

I acquired a TV card for my computer and I plugged my VCR in with red
white and yellow and it was absolutely shocking quality.

Is it worth buying a DVD recorder instead?
