I have had the same problem on occasion and the problem appears to be the
Macrovision circuitry in the player. Sometimes shows up as blue retrace
lines on a large screen TV, or scan lines on a CRT or LCD, and occasional
other defects in the video.

I never could quite decide if it was a marginal DVD or DVD player, but
when I move the offending platter to a Macrovision free player or look at
it on a PC, the problem disappears so I think it is the player.
Quality or name brand of the player doesn't seem to matter.
