Not sure what you mean by that, but I have both a PVR and a DVD
recorder. Their recording capabilities are identical. Both have EPGs
and the ability to program directly from EPG. Neither has
series-linking capability (ie, you're stuffed if you want to record a
programme, such as Dr Who, which varies its time slot from week to
week).
