After the 'fix', you can mow the lawn while it loads up and goes through
the mandatory crap in the leadup to the menu.
As for the game that was on one of them, I've not seen a single report
of anyone being able to actually play it other than some PS3 owners.
BD-J is probably fine IF you have enough oomph in the player, obviously
that isn't the case with everything except the PS3.
And the ones that had problems with a few disks were a very tiny
majority. Most of us just stick the disks in and they work. I've yet
to have ANY HDDVD not just work.
So you are right, it isn't equivalent at all. Almost ALL the users of
BD had to get the firmware to even load the disk, and almost NONE of
them can play the game.
