Newsgroups are accessed through one server that presumably is trustworthy,
so you just have to worry about the content of the messages themselves:
Never open an attachment from someone you don't know.
Always run a virus scan on attachments from someone you do know.
Never click on a link unless you're sure of where it goes (HTML-formatted
posts can spoof the destination if the newsreader allows HTML).
For the internet, where you're dealing with countless unknown servers:
Use a safer browser. Firefox functions very similarly to Internet Explorer,
but it's less vulnerable. Opera is also good, but it has a different user
interface.
Set up a good firewall between your computer and the internet. If you have
a router in your internet connection, you may already have a good firewall.
Check your computer at http://www.grc.com/default.htm -- scroll down to the
Shields Up link. Google Gibson Research Corporation and Shields Up if you
want more info before clicking that link. I linked to that particular page
because there are other interesting things there if you're interested in
online security.
