While it's a good feature, it's one that I would rather not have to worry
about - ever. If I buy an appliance, it better just work. It is not a
PC. It is supposed to be simple to use, without having to expose the
consumer to all the gory details on the backend. You push Play, and the
movie plays.

Can you imagine if this trend continues, and gets out of hand? Imagine
having to upgrade your toaster oven before being able to use it to heat up
a pot-pie for dinner? That's just silly and sad, but essentially what
we're being trained to accept with these incomplete HD players...

I have problems enough dealing with buggy and incomplete software at work
where I'm in software quality assurance (ie. I'm supposed to break the
stuff before it gets to the consumer) When I come home, I just want stuff
to work as it's supposed to, without needing me to update it, patch it or
reboot it. Work, darn you, work!

Either that, or start having these companies pay me a commission for all
these stupid bugs and annoyances I find that were, somehow, considered
"OK" to ship to the consumer.

It's not broken. It's...advanced.
