The actual sequence of events after pressing "Pause" during a DVD movie
playback with the Coby DVD-755 DVD player is as follows:
(1) The movie picture remains on the screen for 3 minutes.
(2) Then it changes to a "Coby" trademark screen.
(3) After another 3 minutes (6 minutes total) it changes to a bouncing-ball
screensaver.
(4) After a further 30 minutes (36 minutes total) the DVD player resets
itself automatically, the volume reverts to maximum loudness, and the movie
starts playing again from the beginning.
Still no reply from their email tech support yet about this problem, but
I've found a work-around which removes most of the inconvenience...
If I change the Setup to turn OFF the Screensaver, then the "Pause"
operation holds OK. At least I've let it go for more than an hour and it is
still holding. I haven't tried it overnight yet but suspect it will work.
This has the disadvantage that I must try to remember to turn off my TV to
avoid burn-in with the big white "Coby" on their trademark screen!?
I need somebody else who has a Coby DVD-755 system to test this and report
back. That's the only way I can know if I have a defective unit, or if this
is a bug in this DVD player's firmware.
I can live with this workaround. I simply have to turn off my TV during
extended pauses or switch it to a different input mode. This makes the Coby
DVD-755 a keeper, a good deal for $60 despite the short 90 day warranty.
I'll now buy the extended 1 year replacement warranty from Kmart for another
$8.
Another tip...
The Coby DVD-755 DVD player, as it comes out of the box, may have a heat
problem. It only has heat vent openings on the bottom, not the top or sides.
Covering the top could reduce heat dissipation and cause a heat buildup
problem. To wit: When I first took it out of the box, it had a big
paper/plastic label stuck to, and covering, most of the top surface with
some troubleshooting FAQs. After running it for awhile in that condition,
when I felt it with my hand, it was unusually warm. Also at about that time,
I got some non-standard video output from the DVD player indicating a
hardware malfunction. The onscreen displays from the DVD player were
distorted and unclear. But after removing the big label from the top, it
runs cooler, and I haven't had this happen again. I have no way of knowing
whether this caused temporary or permanent damage.
