What re you trying to capture? DV25 via firewire would be painless in
Linux, but dedicated hardware might become problematic. I would say Ubuntu
because it's themost popular and easiest distribution to set-up.

Again, for Windows, capturing DV25 is a piece-of-cake, with Window Movie
Maker. No need to buy something special, unless you are going to deal with
dedicated hardware.
