Note that it might be possible without the service manual,
but the SM tells you exactly how to dissemble and reassemble
the unit (which can be VERY tricky on compact consumer stuff).
And it also helps identify where (on which board) the problem
might be.

But if you can figure out how to take it apart on your own, and
identify where the problem is (perhaps a mechanical breakage
on the little board where the FW connector is, etc?) then you
can contact Sony about buying a replacement board using the
part number on the board, etc.

Of course whether they will sell you (or me) a replacement
part is a different matter. If they give you any hassle about it,
you may be able to use your legal clout to remind them of
their obligations :-)
