I can pick up several connections in my area as well. Only 1 that is
unprotected though. I am quite sure they are across the street as the
guy that lives next to me is in his 80's and I highly doubt he has a
network set up in his home.

My best guess is around 50 feet. I don't get a great connection. It goes
in and out but I was actually ably to connect to the itunes store and
download a song.
