I'd still be tempted to install SpywareBlaster to remove a shedload of
ActiveX exploits, and use Firefox for as much as you possibly can, but
otherwise, Kaspersky is an *excellent* choice.
You could always have a looksy at http://www.av-comparatives.org
(follow the online results link and check out the latest test results)
to give yourself an idea how effective it is in real life.
Sadly, some of the test results seem strangely skewed, i.e. some AV
programs score badly at virus detection, but the other results (which
are often not as important) pull the score back up.
Kaspersky actually scores "lower" than Norton on this site, but I can
tell you from personal experience it's:
a) far lighter on resources
b) the detection is great
c) the virus signatutes are being constantly updated - not just once a
week unless-we-get-bad-publicity like Norton !
One small comment I can make about the free version of Kaspersky that
AOL did last year - I check multiple email accounts (7+) concurrently
using Mailwasher, and noticed that it sometimes had problems handling
so many connections to mail / news servers at once - I ended up
disabling the mail / news scanning as a result.
This in itself isn't a showstopper, as anything infected that did get
downloaded would be caught by the resident file checker as it writes
to disk - so by disabling it I simply prevented the same data being
checked multiple times.
