I suspect that there was an experienced boom operator
at the other end of the pole from those microphones.
I further suspect that they had several different mics
to select from to get best results in the particular location
(i.e. how reflective the floor and ceiling were, how many
actors had speaking parts, how much ambient noise, etc.
etc. etc.

What kinds of projects were you involved in as talent?
