You could try Tools / options / maintenance / Clean Up Now and see if some
of those options help.
Remove newsgroup messages if there's a lot, compact the files etc.
Also clean up your temporary internet folder by deleting temp files. OE can
dump a lot of zero-byte files in there.

Oh and if you can find the .dbx files, these might well be very bloated.
Even the 'outbox' file can grow out of all proportion with nothing in it. If
it's these, you can delete the .dbx files and OE will recreate them (after
moving anything you want to keep).
