I believe it's a hardware problem. We've seen it on ours.
Pinnacle used a dongle system to piracy-protect these units.
Yours is sometimes having trouble seeing the dongle. You can try
removing and cleaning the contacts and carefully reinserting it.

They EOL'd these pretty babies way too early, ours is still working
every day, making money, heck, it's more reliable than the toaster we
bought to replace it! Last good thing Pinnacle ever made, IMO.
