The hard drive just adds that extra dimension of space, and usually
makes editing easier. On Panasonics you can use partial delete to
remove ad breaks, splice things into bits and delete the unwanted
stuff etc etc. Plus of course you can set it to record a huge amount
of stuff on good quality without running out of space, or collect a
full series before committing them to disc etc etc.
