George... A computer should never be allowed to operate unsupervised.
It is a sheep in the midst of wolves, a child in the company of
devils. One must oversee the operation of their machine and *know*
what is turned on and what isn't or be ready to re-load Windoze at any
time. There are several "features" in the control panel under
"Services" (see Administative Tools) that just should never be allowed
to run until such time that a person has an actual use for them.
Here's a short list;
Automatic Updates, Telnet, Messenger, Netmeeting remote desktop
sharing, GEAR Security, Indexing service, Internet connection sharing,
Routing and remote access, RunAs Service and there are more, but these
will get you quick if left to fend for themselves. Disable any or all
of these and you can sleep a bit better leaving your machine running
all night when you are not there. Never ever use Internet Explorer,
get Netscape 7.2 (stay away from any version higher than 7.2) or,
better yet, get any of several other browsers out there that don't
leave tracks and don't call home under the pretense of checking for
newer versions. Never allow automatic installation of plug-ins for
any program. Never accept any Microsoft updates, get a good firewall
instead... How do you know what they are putting in your machine? Get
a program called the "eTrust Pest Patrol" and let it have a look
around in your system to check for key loggers and other strange stuff
that gets hooked into your system by cheap-shot software vendors or
warez items you may get from various newsgroups. The current app
"Adobe CS-2" that is now in alt.binaries.cd.image has a nasty key
logger added to it. One must be deligent at protecting their computer
or it will be up for grabs...... on the internet. One last warning...
If you visit Astalavista.com, have *everything* automatic turned off,
firewall tested first, and no java, no active-x.
I like astalavista, I'm a paying member and a contributor. I have met
some very brilliant people there, but be very careful going in there,
it's dangerous to your system.
