See 3) below.

Some info on your setup please:

1) Router?
If you do have one, you may find info about setting it up properly
here -
http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm
Too overwhelming - ask us something specific.

2) Firewall?
Some popular FW setups (including Win XP) here:
http://www.nodata.plus.com/index.html
Follow the links to Firewalls
If yours is not mentioned, let us know what you're using.

3) Since MX (and WWW) are international, it's not uncommon to find that
videos encoded for one standard my not play as intended in players which
conform to another standard.
This is most often overcome by not using software players which were written
by MS outsourced programmers.

Two players that seem to do well are:
http://www.bsplayer.org/
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

If you are going to be downloading video, then VDub (VirtualDub) is a must
for dealing with AVI files and there are a few variations of the program
(VDub-MPEG2, for example) which deal with MPG files. While this is not a
player per se, it can also be used as one.

It is capable of correcting a/v synch problems, but how to coax it to do so
is a topic for another forum - alt.video.divx might be one such.
