I recently joined this newsgroup out of desperation but I might hang
around because everyone sounds so nice :-)
Please realize I am a newbie when it comes to the techie stuff, but
stick with me - I learn fast :-)
This is going to take a lot of space, but I want to give you as much
information as possible.
Problems (uploading)
1. Most people trying to download from me wait forever for a
connection, and usually get timed out.
2. If they get connected, they don't stay connected until their DL is
finished.
3. If their DL starts, it might start as high as 15 or 20 kbs only to
rapidly slow down to a crawl, eventually dying, but usually it starts
at a crawl.
4. If may revive itself temporarily, but rarely enough to finish.
5. Some users have to re-queue dozens of times before completing a
download.
6. I'm surprised some people let me DL from them after all this
trouble.
Problems (downloading)
1. Same as for uploading, except on a less grand scale - I get a
better rate (sometimes 20 to 40 kbs), but even that slows down.
2. If my DL dies, I only have to re-queue 2 or 3 or 4 times to
complete the transfer, but that makes sense - my transfer rate is
faster.
My Environment
1. I am on High-Speed Extreme cable (DL's at 640 kbs and UL's at 100
kbs, but not on WinMX).
2. I am not running MXMonitor anymore.
3. I use a Primary connection - I have mapped my TCP and UDL ports to
my router. But I've tried a Secondary connection as well (no
difference). But I've heard it is more advantageous to everyone if we
have more Primary connections so I stick with that.
4. I have changed my listening ports to 16699 and 16257 respectively
(those are the numbers mapped to my router).
5. I am not limiting my income or outgoing bandwidth.
6. My Throttle Process Interval is set at 200 ms (the default?) -
having it at 50 ms didn't make any difference.
7. My allocated Bandwidth is set at 8kbs out and 12 kbs in - anything
higher or lower didn't make any difference.
8. I have updated my 'hosts' file with the patch - this did not change
my transfers from how it was before WinMX 'faltered', except I have the
Peer network back again.
Can someone please, please, please tell me what to do to improve this
situation and alleviate my guilt at not being able to share my files
more effectively? I have over 25,000 files I could be sharing, but my
queue would be a mile long unless I can fix this transfer problem.
Also, can someone explain to me what the "bandwidth" graph is supposed
to indicate? It doesn't appear to have any relation to actual incoming
and outgoing rates.
My eternal gratitude for any and all help...
