I've known people who do own dvds, but still abuse them. For example,
instead of putting the dvd back in its case, they just put it upside on
a table. Then they drop books/newspapers on top of it.

The picture deteriorates if the disc is heavily scratched. Same with
CDs. I borrowed a friend's CD that literally sounded like a
static-filled record!
