Some semantic problems here, Natalie, so forgive what may appear pedantic.
The HOSTS file changes are not a "patch." So, if it is the HOSTS file to
which you are referring, you can find a working (tho possibly in need of
some minor editing) version of the early redirection targets at:
http://205.238.40.1/hosts/hosts
The WS2_32.DLL substitute, more "patch"-like, was released just a tad too
quickly, before the author(s) verified its operation on non-WinXP OSes.
As to why just plunking a DLL into the WinMX program's folder works, it's
because the program already uses a DLL of that name and the designated
search pattern for finding DLLs and the like, is to first look in the folder
housing the executable (in this case WinMX.EXE). The original of the
WS2_32.DLL is in the Windows\system32 folder, where the MX program would
have looked eventually, failing to find the DLL in an earlier search point.
For you to eliminate whatever problems arose from plunking the WS2_32.DLL
into the WinMX folder, simply go their and delete it while WinMX is NOT
running.
To restore the HOSTS file to its previous MX repaired state, if you did in
fact eliminate the changes:
1) Use Search (or Find) to locate the HOSTS file(s) in your system.
2) Use NotePad, if you don't have a decent text editor, to open the HOSTS
file(s) where you find it/them.
3) Go to the web page mentioned above and from the browser menu chose
Edit/Select All, Edit/Copy -
4) then switch to NotePad and place the cursor at the end of the file.
choose Edit/Paste.
If there is not HOSTS file on your PC, then you need to create one by saving
the web page content, once pasted into NotePad, as HOSTS (no extension) in
the Windows directory appropriate for your OS, which is this
C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc for XP users and just C:\windows for 98/ME.
Now, the HOSTS file mods are rapidly getting out of date. Some time
yesterday there were 5 cache servers available (while the designated HOSTS
file has but two) and I've not yet checked today.
