I purchased the S:AAB set today from Best Buy and here are my
observations. This should be called "Space: Above and Beyond...the
release that didn't happen".
I'll just make this short and simple. The video qualilty is fair and the
audio is very nice. The DVDs have no label on them sans a color coded
band matching the case it comes from. Three slimline cases, 5 DVDs and NO
extras of any kind. The menus aren't even motion menus, just still
montages.
The pilot played through fine but starting at chapter 9 in the second
episode, my dvd software froze. I tried using 2 different DVD drives and
three different software players (WinDVD 7, Windows Media Player 10 and
Nero Showtime). All locked up in the exact same place.
Nero did give me a copy protection error saying the disc was impossible
to read. Chapters 9, 10 and 11 of the second episode simply will not
play. My system is running XP with Service Pack 2, has 2 gigs of memory
and an ATI AIW x800xt video card.
I'm going to exchange the set tomorrow but something tells me that I will
experience the same issues. It's sad really, this series has been sought
out for years by fans. There is absolutely zero mention of it on
www.foxtvdvd.com or anywhere on any Fox site. The packaging is what you
would expect a homebrew (bootleg) set to have.
Just my .02
