Don't know if this applies to you, or will help at all, but.....
After I got DSL, I had GREAT service for a short while, then, BOOM!
Nothing would work--I could connect, but couldn't get much in the way of
search results, very few chat rooms, and NO D/L or U/L activity.
I didn't have a router at that time, just a direct connection from my PC
to the DSL modem. I used Steve Gibson's website (www.grc.com) to check
my ports, and found that ALL were being blocked. I queried my ISP re:
the possibility that the DSL modem NAT capability might be blocking.
They didn't even know what I was talking about! (Small town in RURAL
MO, home-grown ISP!) Anyway, after a short while SUDDENLY things
started working again--no rhyme or reason.
Fast forward--I installed a router, had problems again. I forwarded
ports--still no joy. Finally, I unhooked the router, so that the PC was
again directly connected to the DSL modem. Off to grc.com again, and
found that once again ALL ports are STEALTH (blocked). Used my laptop
and it's 56K modem to connect to grc.com, then WinMX, and VIOLA!! No
blocking! Seems my ISP has a firewall of their own for their DSL
traffic. Can't get them to confirm this, as they still don't know what
I'm talking about.
So, moral of the story: go to www.grc.com and use the Shields-Up test to
see if your ISP is firewalling you. If so, you're probably SOL, just as
I am.
