How did WinMX ever get that reputation, I will never know. Though it's
not quite supported by Front Code, there's still plenty of help
resources on the internet. I'm not PC savy, yet I can download most of
what I want. For a program that's almost certifiably spyware free,
supporting a massive user base, WinMX continues to be a miracle of
file-sharing.

A problem addressed ad nauseum. Fake files are annoying but like
leeches, they don't undermine the program completely. Do you think
RIAA would slam only WinMX users, or WinMX at all if it was such an
otherwise user-unfriendly program?

Huh? Last night, I hooked my laptop up to test a new DSL line and
figured that I'd give it the acid test by running WinMX on it. For a
minute or so, nothing happened - WinMX started up and refused to
connect. Then it hit me - I hadn't used the machine on-line since last
April, 6 months before "cease & desist". Because I'd completely
forgotten how I fixed the program on my desktop last October, I came
back to the NG and found the link to the 2.0 installer. In minutes I'd
downloaded and installed 3.54 w/any patches, and was back on-line. So
on and so forth? Getting on WinMX these days is ludicrously simple.

Just remember, you used that word.

Read what I wrote above. Since last October, WinMX continues to remain
a stable and reliable source of files. I can't believe somebody with 7
years experience on WinMX can be so easily floored by such a simple
program.

Why is it whenever somebody here is considering going outside of WinMX,
they always refer to friends or "buddies"? Personally, I have no
experience with WinMX, or much else. I've been too satisfied with
WinMX to spend much time outside of it.

You've heard from where? WinMX is the only
new WinMX.

It's simple because the question sort of suggests the answer.
Typically, things become obsolete because something better came along -
like a fighter jet or a submarine becoming obsolete because some better
plane or ship was built. If WinMX was made obsolete because of a new
program, you'd junk it for that new program.

I ain't no programmer either - though if there was some free program
out there that let me get tons of music or video media also for free,
and didn't require a credit card or e-mail referrals from 10 friends,
I'd be happy enough to spend the extra time needed to learn how it
worked.

what's wrong with that stuff? It's called sharing.
