I'll spare you. Digital audio terminology:

Encoding:
How a song was compressed from AIFF or WAV into another format. For instance, one can create an MP3 with MusicMatch, I-Tunes or LAME among others. My MP3's are encoded with LAME. They will play on anything that claims to support MP3.
There are other formats aside from MP3. For example, Ogg Vorbis and Musepack. You would use an Ogg Vorbis encoder to make Ogg Vorbis files and a Musepack encoder to create Musepack files.

DRM:
Digital Rights Management. This is the name given to the "protection" that prevents you from doing anything with certain songs you create or buy online.
