The convertor and codec did the trick. I actually had to find a site
with the version 10 (free) of the convertor; current version is a
free-to-try, $-to-buy thing.

The convertor worked fine and speedily enough (I guess), about 5x or 6x
real time. In the end though, I didn't realize any amazing savings -
CBR conversion saved about 30% over the mp3 files, VBR conversion
produced larger files than the mp3 versions.
