Yes, you're wrong. They're typically between 4 and 15 MB in size. They can be a lot smaller or a lot bigger, though. It depends on the "bitrate" of the MP3 file.
A 5-minute song at 32kbps will take up 1.2MB, but that same song at 320kbps will take up 12MB.
I think most people these days still encode most of their MP3's at 128kbps, meaning that a 5-minute song will take up 4.8MB.
Perhaps those tiny files you saw before were .CDA files? .CDA files are metafiles created by Windows, which act as shortcuts to play the tracks on music-CD's.
