I can see that happening - once the RIAA has managed to completely outlaw
"free digital downloads", and control the data flow of everything they hold
copyright to, but until the entire world is connected to the net, there
should continue to be a fair amount of foot traffic in the brick-and-mortar
shops. Million-selling titles are still fairly common, despite copies been
shared, and industry profits are still measured in the billions of dollars
worldwide.
Now, compact discs, as we have been accustomed to (insofar as "fair use" is
concerned) may in fact be headed for obsolence - if the relentless campaign
to copyright-cripple new releases/editions continues unabated. I'm still
looking for some older releases in the second-hand market, which I suspect
will survive for some time. My not-insubstantial investment in a music
library appears to be appreciating every day.
As long as there are collectors who value the tangible object, and not a
digital facsimile, I would say that *some* form of compact disc will be
with us for a while yet - at least the "near future". I would lament the
loss of this format, just as I did vinyl records (which I could play and
tape to my hearts content, as crappy as the copy might be depending on my
skills/equipment).
It's been said before that if the music industry is determined to treat
every potential customer as a pirate, then it should come as no suprise
when their worst fears are realized.
