I too have an Iriver 899 running the UMS software.
The only times I have seen it scramble the directories I have been able to
track the problem down to something user related, me.
Once while I tried loading files into the player with out first changing to
a fresh battery. The old battery died during the transfer resulting in the
trashed directories.
Another time was when I used a borrowed USB cable. The cable was later
found to be causing similar problems when used with an external USB hard
drive. The cable was replaced with a new one and those problems were gone.
And my only other time was when the USB plug got pulled during a transfer by
someone who wanted to plug in a camera.
I'm not saying your problems are not inside the player, they might be, but
just that there are other ways for the directories to get corrupted when
loading files to a player of just about any brand.
