Have you considered a CD player that will run MP3 encoded CD's? Since
you'll probably be archiving your music collection onto CD anyway, MP3
CD players are very cost effective. Unfortunately, ID tags don't seem
to get support, and at least on my Panasonic SV-570, you can't speed
scan within a single file, and it seems you've got to play the files in
sequence. But otherwise you can cram hours of music onto a single CD,
you don't have to futz with expensive replacement batteries, and the
players themselves can be had for less than $50 - even those with
radios.
