Thanks for the link - the topic has also been raised in
alt.music.mp3.winmx, wherein I replied as follows: < begin paste >

[...] the headline hyperbole falls critically short of the actual facts.

Here's the important part - <quote>
The ruling conservatives' parliamentary leader, Bernard Accoyer, rejected
government demands for a fresh vote Thursday, saying lawmakers will first
take time to listen to all sides, "in particular the artists and creators."

The final lower-house vote is not expected until after Jan. 17, when
deputies return from their winter break. The bill requires only one further
vote in the Senate to become law, under the emergency procedure invoked by
the government to comply with a 2001 European Union directive on digital
piracy. <end quote>

This whole thing revolves around "proposals", "amendments", "draft
legislation" and opposing viewpoints on exactly what those documents
should contain - but to date nothing has actually been *voted* on.

The fact the issue is being hotly debated (especially with reference to
<quote> Under the original proposals, those caught pirating copy-protected
material would have faced $360,000 in fines and up to three years in jail.
<end quote>) is certainly gratifying, but is by no means a "fait accompli"
as far as legalising P2P sharing.

While I'm all for championing the cause of fair use, and I'm happy to
see the Copyright Cartel curtailed somewhat in their attempts to make
the "crime" of loving music a *criminal* offense, I think it's a little
premature to break out the champagne.

When (if) the day comes that all parties affected by the march of
technology reach an amicable agreement - or even agree to co-exist
peacefully - that will be a time for celebration.

Until then... I'm going to have a beer and see how all of this plays out on
the *worldwide* stage.
