It doesn't *mean* italics. It indicates that this is a place where the
author might have wanted to use italics, perhaps for emphasis, or
perhaps for a title, or a foreign word. But printers recognise
underlining to stand for italics, while asterisks are traditionally used
to indicate emphasis.
It's all a fairly movable feast on Usenet and always has been. No big
deal. Mostly, people are understood.
