It *does* matter! When you emphasize you should do it by making clear
you are listening to the person you are emphasizing with, and by showing
them with eye contact that you understand their feelings. A nice hug, if
appropriate, will also help. I don't think that a few punctuation marks
are really going to make you seem emphathetic.
