It seems what we have established is that there is no definative
way of representing italics in plain text Usenet posts. The two
most common ways of doing so (should anyone ever actually want to
do so) appear to be with "_" and "/".
Far more common is the desire to indicate *emphasis*, where "*"
and "_" seem to be the most common characters to use.
If you have found a set of Usenet posting guidelines which
deprecate the use of "_" to represent italics please provide
us with the URL.
