I haven't seen that. I just tried to make sense of the man page.

No, I specified --comp 442 and 44 and 48 and 50 but I got
a ratio of 44.13 each time--which would give approx. 904 MB
(That's the ratio from thew stereo original.)

Yep, that's what I figured after trying it on the largest file.

:-) that explains why the resulting file was 15 minutes of crickets.

I tried turning on VBR, but it made the file HUGE.

The size is OK for -b 24 --resamp 22.05 so if the words are
intelligible, I'll take it. I am really tired of wrestling
with this thing.

Thanks for all your help, though. I'd be in the padded room
by now if on my own.
