Could be, but I think it's more due to so many other forms of
communication popping up that are available to people -- thousands of
web-based forums, IM networks, provider-specific discussion and chat
groups, etc. A lot of ISPs are starting to consider Usenet feeds
optional, and have limited or no "built-in" Usenet support at all, and
make their customers pay a premium NNTP provider for service.

Still seems to be a healthy binary presence on Usenet, but the number of
users of the text groups seems to be declining every year.

I bet if you asked today's "average" internet user what Usenet was you'd
get a blank look. Wouldn't have been like that 10 years ago.
