I have experimented a bit with this type of thing as I record radio
programs to play later in my car, and like to get a lot of material
onto a single CD. To experiment, it is a good idea to record several
versions of the same clip using different parameters and then listen to
them to decide what is the minimal acceptable.
I have recorded so that I could get as much as 35 hours of speech onto
a single CD, but with poor results that leave the listener with severe
ear-strain. The best results in terms of listening comfort, I find, are
to record at a sample rate of 48000 Hz and a Bit Rate of 128 Kbps. This
gives about 12.75 hours of recorded material on a standard CD. At this
level I can hear it quite clearly in spite of road noise and there are
no compromises. To go below this level tends to produce a less
satisfactory listening experience, though it can still be listened to.
